Why goals must be planned together
Planned one at a time, each goal looks affordable. Added up, they often exceed what a household can actually set aside — which is exactly the discovery worth making early rather than in year seven.
Seeing the combined figure forces the useful conversation: which goals are non-negotiable, which can be deferred, and which can be scaled down.
When the total is more than you can invest
- Extend the timeline on the goals that allow it. This is almost always the most effective lever.
- Reduce the target where the goal is discretionary.
- Sequence them — a goal completing in year five frees its instalment for the next.
- Protect the essential ones first. Retirement cannot be borrowed for; education can.
